To wrap knives for sharpening, lay them on a clean kitchen towel or apron, then roll them up tightly, ensuring the sharp edges are protected by the fabric, and secure the bundle with a rubber band or twine; this method keeps the blades from damaging each other while being transported to a sharpening service.
The trick, as you’ll see in the animation below, is to pick one of your thicker kitchen towels, and to fold it so that the tips of the blades push against a double layer of fabric, so they won’t just slice through.
*And once the blades are all rolled up, you can tie an elastic band around the bundle and be on your merry way.
· Use a protective material:
Always use a thick kitchen towel, an old apron, or even a dedicated knife roll to wrap your knives.
· Lay knives flat:
Place your knives flat on the fabric with the blades facing the same direction.
· Roll tightly:
Starting from one end, roll the fabric around the knives, ensuring the sharp edges are fully covered.
· Secure with a tie:
Once rolled, tie the bundle with a rubber band or twine to keep it secure.
· Newspaper wrap:
For a quick option, wrap each knife individually in several layers of newspaper, then secure with tape.
· Cardboard sheath:
If you need more protection, cut cardboard to create a sheath around the blade and tape it in place.
· Knife roll:
If you have a dedicated knife roll, use it to safely store and transport your knives.
